Low Histamine Meal Builder
The low histamine meal builder lets you construct a complete meal from three columns — protein, vegetables, and base ingredients — with a real-time histamine score that updates as you select. High-histamine ingredients are marked automatically so you can spot and swap them.
Select one protein, one or more vegetables, and one or more base ingredients. The score calculates instantly and tells you whether the meal is safe, moderate, or high histamine.
One of the hardest parts of starting a low-histamine diet isn’t knowing which foods to avoid — it’s figuring out what to actually eat. The avoidance lists are long. The safe lists are shorter. And putting together a meal that’s balanced, satisfying, and genuinely low in histamine takes more thought than it seems.
This meal builder walks you through the process: choose a protein, add vegetables, pick a carbohydrate base, select a fat and seasoning. Each option has been pre-filtered to exclude high-histamine ingredients and common histamine liberators — so anything you build here is safe during the elimination phase.
Elimination phase only: This builder is designed for the strict elimination phase. Once you’ve completed reintroduction and know your personal tolerances, your safe food list may be broader than what’s shown here.
Turning a meal into a week
Once you have a few reliable meal combinations, the next step is building them into a weekly structure. The key constraint with low-histamine eating is freshness — meals need to be cooked and eaten promptly rather than stored in the fridge for days.
The most practical system: prepare grains and roasted vegetables in batches and freeze them immediately, then cook protein fresh each day. This gives you speed and convenience without the histamine accumulation that comes from refrigerated leftovers. The meal prep guide covers this in detail.
For a full week of pre-planned meals built around these same safe ingredients, the 7-day meal plan gives you the structure without having to plan from scratch. If you’re eating out rather than cooking, the eating out guide applies the same principles to restaurant menus.
How to use the low histamine meal builder
During the elimination phase, aim for meals that score below 10 points. Items marked in orange are high-histamine and should be avoided completely in weeks 1–3. During the reintroduction phase, you can experiment with moderate-scoring ingredients while monitoring your response.
The freshness rule applies regardless of what the builder shows: even safe ingredients become high-histamine if cooked and refrigerated for more than 24 hours. Cook fresh and eat immediately, or freeze leftovers. For complete food lists see our histamine intolerance food list.
