Histamine Load Calculator

Histamine intolerance works on a threshold model: your body can handle a certain amount of histamine before symptoms appear. Below the threshold, you feel fine. Above it, symptoms emerge. The threshold isn’t fixed – it shifts based on your DAO enzyme activity on that day, stress level, hormonal phase, and medications.

A single high-histamine food isn’t always the problem. Often it’s the combination – a moderate-histamine lunch, wine with dinner, leftover protein, and a cup of black tea that together push the total load over your individual limit. Understanding your cumulative load, rather than avoiding individual foods in isolation, is what makes the difference between managing histamine intolerance well and managing it poorly.

Enter the foods from a recent meal or a typical day below to estimate your histamine load and see how it compares to a typical tolerance threshold.

The histamine load calculator below estimates your total histamine burden based on the foods you’ve eaten today and factors that affect your ability to break histamine down. It uses the histamine bucket model – the concept that your body can handle a certain amount of histamine before symptoms appear, and that your total load from multiple sources determines whether you overflow.

Select every food you’ve consumed today, then add any relevant lifestyle factors. Your histamine load score updates in real time.

These affect how efficiently your body breaks down histamine. Active factors are shown in orange.

What does this score mean? The histamine bucket model explains why symptoms seem inconsistent — it is your total load that matters, not any single food. A score under 30 is typically well-tolerated. Between 30–60, symptoms become possible. Above 60, reactions are likely. Above 100, the bucket is overflowing.

What a high score means – and what to do

A high load score doesn’t mean every food in that meal needs to be cut permanently. It means the combination exceeded a reasonable threshold. The practical response is usually one of two things: reduce the portion size of the highest-histamine items, or space high-histamine foods further apart across the day rather than concentrating them in one meal.

The most effective single change most people can make is addressing the highest-scoring items first – typically alcohol, aged cheese, and fermented or tinned products – while keeping lower-scoring items. This reduces the load substantially without eliminating everything.

For a structured approach to reducing load, the low-histamine diet guide covers the full framework. For meals that keep load manageable from the start, the Meal Builder only includes foods that score low on histamine content. If you want protection before a high-load meal – a dinner out, a celebration – a DAO enzyme supplement taken 15–20 minutes before eating provides additional breakdown capacity.
